About Phi Theta Kappa

Phi Theta Kappa is an international honor society for students at two-year colleges.

“The purpose of Phi Theta Kappa shall be to recognize and encourage scholarship among two-year college students.  To achieve this purpose, Phi Theta Kappa shall provide opportunity for the development of service and leadership, for an intellectual climate for the exchange of ideas and ideals, for lively fellowship for scholars, and for stimulation of interest in continuing academic excellence.”

Phi Theta Kappa’s mission is two-fold: 1) recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students; and, 2) provide opportunities for individual growth and development through participation in honors, leadership, service and fellowship programming.

About membership in the Upsilon Delta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa

Upsilon Delta offers two kinds of membership: standard and enhanced.  The $60 cost is the same for both types of membership, as well as the tangible benefits: membership pin; certificate; wallet identification card; etc.

The difference is that enhanced membership gets a prospective member involved in meetings and activities.  Our hope is that once you get involved, you’ll see the intangible benefits of Phi Theta Kappa and want to become an active member or even assume a leadership role.  Our club is active on campus only because our members are willing to give of their time and talents.  Phi Theta Kappa is a springboard to developing leadership skills and participating in community service.

To be an enhanced member you must do the following:

     1.    Attend three meetings (orientation counts as one meeting).  Have an officer or advisor sign the verification form for both meetings and activities (scholarship, service, fundraising).

     2.    Earn three points (either through service projects, scholarship activities, fundraisers, or any project requiring volunteers, such as tutoring, staffing club day, etc.)

Service and scholarship projects are and will be scheduled between now and induction and will be announced throughout the semester.  Each time you participate in an event, you earn one point.

We are also selling Best Books ($15).  These books contain coupons for food, entertainment, etc.  Selling 3 of these books earns you one point.  Dr. Waters handles the checkout for these books.

Another fundraising activity we participate in is selling Kroger “gift certificate” cards.  We sell the cards for $5, but they have a $5 balance on them.  You may then take the card to the customer service desk at a Kroger and put more credit on the card.  When you purchase groceries, use the gift certificate card as you would a credit card to pay for your groceries.  You will receive one point for each $100 you place on the card.

Other activities will be announced as the officers schedule them.

Those members who earn “enhanced” membership will receive a special medal at induction.  Usually it is the enhanced member who goes on to assume a leadership role.  We try to provide travel opportunities (partial funding) for active members and officers to attend regional and international meetings and conventions.
